Chapter 7

Samazrael

I staggered down the sidewalk, growling to try and tune out the voices clamoring to be heard over each other. What was that back at the bar? I’d been surrounded by her aura, let myself get lost in its comforting embrace. And her thoughts, her emotions, there’d been no wall up today. Nothing to prevent what she was feeling from swarming around me and through me.

I kissed her. Her own want became tangled with my need to drown out my soul’s agony and feel anything until I didn’t know what I was doing. Then my lips were on hers. What had I been thinking? She was Lucifer’s daughter.

Then why do you want to do it again?

The notion stopped me short. Did I? I assumed most of what drove me to run my fingers through her hair and gently touch her skin that was far warmer than an average human’s had been because of what she’d felt. I held up my hand, rubbing my fingers together. Her aura coated my skin. Was that why I touched her, or was it something more?

Heph’s words about having a theory regarding my reaction to Ashmielle came back to me. What did he know that I didn’t? Not that it mattered.

I couldn’t want her, I couldn’t want anyone, not like that. Not when I was a walking threat with fangs and claws. I meant to take my time telling her the truth, too. I wanted to know where she’d been since she was stolen from me. But when the explosion of tangled emotions coming from her went from wanting to confusion and right to anger, the words poured out of me.

Why was I surprised she hadn’t believed me? And I just had to push her. I hadn’t meant to, and then Ashmielle lost it and went after me. Shit. I could’ve hurt her, but the power inside her, how did she not know she’d had it all this time?

“But she does know,” I whispered, remembering how she reacted. She hadn’t been shocked or terrified of the fire creeping up her arms. The night of the fire, she’d appeared stunned to learn she hadn’t been burned, but there’d been resolve in her eyes, too. Some part of her, however small, knew she wasn’t normal.

Except if she’d been using this power all along, someone would’ve seen her much sooner. Heph had to be right. Whoever stole her away must’ve placed a powerful enchantment on her demon half to keep her hidden. Either that person had grown careless, or they were dead. Every day that passed, her power grew in strength. If I didn’t get her to Hell soon, have someone show her how to control the Hellfire coursing through her veins, she’d hurt someone.

The questions surrounding Ashmielle just continued to pile up. Where had she been all this time? How did she end up so covered in scars? Each question drove another spike of aggravation through my skull and added to how unstable I already was. Dealing with Ashmielle’s unrestrained emotions on top of mine was going to be a nightmare.
